This is under the ADA prediabetes cut-point. Because A1C is weighted towards recent weeks rather than spread evenly across the full 120 days, it starts moving before three months have elapsed.
The scale is gentler than it looks. Moving from here to 5.4% shifts the estimated average by only about 3 mg/dL, to roughly 108 mg/dL — well inside the 0.5-point band the assay is allowed to wander within.
The conversion comes from a population regression. In the ADAG study, individuals sharing an A1C had mean glucose values spread meaningfully around the fitted line, so your own average may sit above or below this estimate.
What this number cannot show is glucose variability. Continuous monitoring data reveals a pattern through the day that no single averaged figure can express.
Because the measurement covers a rolling window of months, retesting much sooner than three months largely re-measures the same period and adds little information.
The precision of the reported figure invites more confidence than it deserves. A result printed to one decimal place still carries the method tolerance around it, so treat the last digit as approximate.
