BMR is the energy your body uses at complete rest. This calculator runs the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the 1984 revision of Harris-Benedict, and Katch-McArdle when you have a lean-mass figure, then shows the gap between them, because that gap is bigger than most calculators admit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BMR and RMR?
Strictly, basal metabolic rate is measured after an overnight fast in a thermally neutral room on waking, and resting metabolic rate is measured under less exacting conditions and runs slightly higher. The prediction equations here were fitted on resting measurements, so the two terms are used interchangeably in practice.
Which BMR equation is the most accurate?
A 2005 systematic review found Mifflin-St Jeor landed within 10 percent of measured resting metabolic rate for more people, obese and not, than any other equation it reviewed, and had the narrowest error range. That is why it is the default here, with the others shown for comparison.
When is the Katch-McArdle equation worth using?
Only when the lean-mass figure going into it was measured rather than guessed. It uses fat-free mass instead of weight, height, age and sex, so a body-composition estimate that is off by five kilograms moves the answer by more than a hundred kcal a day.
Why is the Harris-Benedict number higher than the others?
The equations date from 1919 and were refitted by Roza and Shizgal in 1984 on a wider age range; they tend to sit above Mifflin-St Jeor for the same body. Roza and Shizgal report a precision of about 14 percent for one person, which is wider than the 10 percent criterion.
Can I raise my BMR?
The equations here contain four inputs: weight, height, age and sex. Two of those do not change and one changes in one direction only, so arithmetic can say only that a larger body has a higher resting figure. What that means for anyone is a question for a clinician rather than a calculator.
