  • CrossFit: No row containing 'CrossFit' or 'functional fitness' exists in the 2024 Adult Compendium. The nearest listed rows are 'Circuit training, body weight exercises' (6.0) and 'High intensity interval exercise ... vigorous effort' (11.0), which span too wide a range to stand in for it.

Borrowing a value from a similar-looking activity would produce a confident number with no source behind it, which is the one thing this site is built not to do.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate calories burned during exercise?
Calories per minute equals the activity MET value times 3.5 times your weight in kilograms, divided by 200. At 70 kilograms and 9.8 METs that is 12.005 per minute, so 30 minutes is 360 calories. The equation comes from the Compendium definition of one MET as 3.5 millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute.
What is a MET value?
A multiple of resting energy cost. Walking at 2.8 to 3.4 mph is 3.8 METs, meaning it uses roughly 3.8 times as much energy per minute as sitting still. The 2024 Adult Compendium publishes values for 1,114 activities, and this tool cites the exact code and wording of the row it used.
Should I use the gross or the net figure?
Net, if you are thinking about energy balance. The gross number includes the calories you would have spent at rest during those same minutes, which for a light activity is most of the total. A 30 minute walk at 3.8 METs is 140 calories gross and 103 net for a 70 kilogram body.
Why is this different from what my watch says?
A watch estimates from heart rate, movement and its own model of you; this uses a lab-measured population mean for the activity. Both are estimates of the same thing by different routes, and the Compendium publishes no error term per row, so this tool shows the neighbouring effort rows instead.
Which activities are missing, and why?
Pickleball and CrossFit have no row in the 2024 Adult Compendium, so this site publishes no MET value for them rather than borrowing one from a different activity. The pack records both omissions with the reason, and the tool lets you enter a MET value yourself if you have a sourced one.
Does body weight change the answer much?
Proportionally. The equation is linear in weight, so a 90 kilogram body burns about 29 percent more than a 70 kilogram one doing the same activity for the same time. It is also linear in duration and in MET value, which makes every figure here easy to check by hand.
