The NHS publishes this figure for week 19, about the size of a beef tomato. It is an average from patient guidance rather than a measurement of any particular pregnancy, and the measurement basis changes at week 20 - see the note below the dates.

15.3 cm, described by the NHS as roughly a beef tomato, and this is the last week the measurement means what it has meant so far. Adult teeth are forming behind the first set, which will not be needed for six years or so. Weight is going on steadily now. Bubbling sensations that could plausibly be movement are becoming harder to attribute to anything else. Ligaments have loosened enough that running and similar exercise can feel unstable, which is a mechanical change rather than a limit anyone has imposed. Halfway is next week, and the halfway point is a strange one emotionally. There is often less to report than in the first trimester and less urgency than in the third, and it can feel like a plateau. It is not. This is the stretch where sleep is still possible, work is still manageable, and decisions that will be hard to make later - childcare, leave dates, where the baby will sleep - can be made calmly. The people who find weeks 30 onwards least stressful are almost always the ones who used weeks 19 to 25 for something other than waiting.

What the NHS describes this week

  • The NHS puts the foetus at around 15.3 cm from head to bottom - the last week measured this way.
  • Adult teeth are beginning to form behind the first set.
  • Weight is being gained steadily in preparation for birth.

What happens around now

Loosened ligaments can make some exercise feel unstable from about now. This is the calmest stretch of the calendar for arranging leave dates and childcare, which are much harder to sort in the third trimester.

On the measurement. The NHS publishes a length for each week from 4 to 40. Up to week 19 it is measured head to bottom (crown to rump, the measurement a scan takes while the legs are curled). From week 20 it is measured head to heel, which is why the figure jumps from 15.3 cm at week 19 to 25.6 cm at week 20 - the baby did not grow 10 cm in a week, the ruler changed. The NHS states the change on its week 20 page.
