The NHS publishes this figure for week 22, about the size of a sweet potato. It is an average from patient guidance rather than a measurement of any particular pregnancy, and the measurement basis changes at week 20 - see the note below the dates.
27.8 cm, sweet-potato sized, and the lungs have started rehearsing. Breathing movements happen in fluid, which does nothing for gas exchange and everything for building the muscle and coordination that will be needed in one specific moment several months from now. Amniotic fluid is being swallowed; what is not absorbed becomes meconium, the dark sticky first nappy contents. Taste buds are forming, and what is eaten shows up in the fluid. Movements are strong enough now that a hand on the bump sometimes gets an answer, though whether the answer is a response or a coincidence is unknowable and beside the point. Stretch marks may be appearing on the stomach, thighs and breasts. The vaccination window remains open for whooping cough. There is a habit worth forming this week: paying attention to the pattern of movement rather than counting it. The NHS is clear that there is no set number of movements to expect and no chart to hit; what matters is what is usual for this particular pregnancy, and noticing a change from it.

What the NHS describes this week
- The NHS puts the foetus at around 27.8 cm from head to toe this week.
- The lungs are developing and practice breathing movements happen in the amniotic fluid.
- Amniotic fluid is swallowed, and what is not absorbed forms meconium; taste buds are forming.
What happens around now
NHS guidance on movements is that there is no set number to expect. What matters is the pattern usual for this pregnancy, and a change from it is a reason to contact a midwife or maternity unit the same day rather than wait.
On the measurement. The NHS publishes a length for each week from 4 to 40. Up to week 19 it is measured head to bottom (crown to rump, the measurement a scan takes while the legs are curled). From week 20 it is measured head to heel, which is why the figure jumps from 15.3 cm at week 19 to 25.6 cm at week 20 - the baby did not grow 10 cm in a week, the ruler changed. The NHS states the change on its week 20 page.
