Keeping the list somewhere

This page prints, and ticking it is local to your browser. If you would rather keep a list somewhere other people can see and add to, a registry does that job.

Frequently asked questions

What do you actually need for a newborn?
The NHS newborn list is short: somewhere safe to sleep with a firm flat mattress, at least 6 sleepsuits, 4 to 6 vests, at least 4 fitted sheets, 2 sleeping bags or a cellular blanket, nappies, cotton wool, a changing mat, a rear-facing infant car seat and a pushchair that reclines flat.
When should a baby registry be set up?
There is no clinical answer to that, so this checklist is organised by trimester rather than by a date. Most of the items sit in the third trimester because that is when a newborn arrives to them; the second trimester is the calm stretch for paperwork and leave dates.
Why are there no brands or product recommendations?
Because this site does not test baby equipment and has no basis on which to rank it. Quantities and safety wording here come from NHS patient guidance and are attributed to it. Anything beyond that would be an opinion dressed up as guidance.
What does the NHS say about cot bedding?
Its newborn list specifies a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly with no gaps, at least 4 fitted sheets, and 2 sleeping bags or sheets and a cellular blanket - and states plainly that duvets and pillows are not used, because of the risk of suffocation.
Can I print this checklist?
Yes. Printing the page gives you the list without site navigation, buttons or ads - the print stylesheet strips them. Ticking boxes on screen is local to your browser and is not saved anywhere.

Where the quantities and the safety wording come from

Working out the money side? The baby cost calculator adds up published figures only. Still choosing a name? The name generator runs on ONS data. And every week from 1 to 42 has its own page.
