The NHS publishes this figure for week 26, about the size of a cucumber. It is an average from patient guidance rather than a measurement of any particular pregnancy, and the measurement basis changes at week 20 - see the note below the dates.
35.6 cm, cucumber-length, and the eyes open for the first time. Blinking is being learned. Eye colour is developing, and it is worth saying that the colour at birth is frequently not the colour at one year, which spares a certain amount of unnecessary speculation. Tiredness has usually stepped up again by now, along with clumsiness that comes from carrying weight in a place the body has no experience of carrying it. Leg cramps at night are common and specific: a sudden hard spasm in the calf that wakes you both. Forgetfulness gets called baby brain, which is a phrase doing a lot of work to describe interrupted sleep and a permanently occupied mind. One trimester to go. If the room is going to be redecorated, this is roughly the last window in which painting it is straightforward - ventilation matters, the smell is unpleasant when the sense of smell is heightened, and standing on a ladder is about to stop being sensible. Doing it now rather than in week 34 is the difference between a project and a scramble.

What the NHS describes this week
- The NHS puts the foetus at around 35.6 cm from head to heel this week.
- The eyes open for the first time and blinking is being learned.
- Eye colour is developing.
What happens around now
Leg cramps, tiredness and altered balance are common from about now, and the NHS lists them among the ordinary changes of late pregnancy.
On the measurement. The NHS publishes a length for each week from 4 to 40. Up to week 19 it is measured head to bottom (crown to rump, the measurement a scan takes while the legs are curled). From week 20 it is measured head to heel, which is why the figure jumps from 15.3 cm at week 19 to 25.6 cm at week 20 - the baby did not grow 10 cm in a week, the ruler changed. The NHS states the change on its week 20 page.
