The NHS publishes this figure for week 35, about the size of a honeydew melon. It is an average from patient guidance rather than a measurement of any particular pregnancy, and the measurement basis changes at week 20 - see the note below the dates.
46.2 cm and getting rounder, which is the point of the fat being laid down - temperature regulation on the outside is a job the body has never had to do before. Movements should still be strong and regular despite the shortage of room. Colostrum may be leaking enough to need breast pads. Sore ribs are a theme this week, because feet have found them and there is nowhere else for feet to go. Braxton Hicks continue. Something practical: the freezer. Cooking in the first fortnight after a birth is close to impossible, and the difference between a household that eats properly and one that lives on toast is almost entirely made in the weeks before. Batch cook now, label it, and put it somewhere that does not require moving three other things to reach. That is not a domestic nicety; it is one of the few pieces of preparation that reliably pays off, and it is a job that can be done entirely by whichever of you is not pregnant.

What the NHS describes this week
- The NHS puts the baby at around 46.2 cm from head to heel this week.
- Fat is continuing to build, which helps regulate body temperature after birth.
- Movements remain strong and regular despite the reduced space.
What happens around now
Colostrum leaking is common by now. The NHS notes movements should stay strong and regular even though space is limited.
On the measurement. The NHS publishes a length for each week from 4 to 40. Up to week 19 it is measured head to bottom (crown to rump, the measurement a scan takes while the legs are curled). From week 20 it is measured head to heel, which is why the figure jumps from 15.3 cm at week 19 to 25.6 cm at week 20 - the baby did not grow 10 cm in a week, the ruler changed. The NHS states the change on its week 20 page.
