Luteal phase
The luteal phase runs from ovulation to the start of the next period. It is the more consistent half of the cycle, typically 9 to 17 days, which is why cycle-length variation mostly comes from the phase before it.
Example
Because the luteal phase is relatively fixed, estimating ovulation backwards from the expected period is more reliable than counting forwards from the last one.
